Welcome back to my Wardrobe Overhaul! It’s been a couple of weeks since I started to talk about this and I really wanted to provide you with an update on where I’ve gotten to with this decluttering project.
I’ve been watching Tidying Up with Marie Kondo on Netflix and I am HOOKED! So, using that as inspiration, I moved all of the clothes out of my drawers, wardrobe and…some other places that I stash my clothing into the spare bedroom.
This created instant regret as I couldn’t see the bedroom let alone what I had to wear! However, it did give me an idea of the scale of the problem I was facing. Mountains of clothes were before me and I had no idea where to start.
My first thoughts were to form piles to reflect when I was wearing my clothes (or for what occasion) so I had piles compromising of:
- Work Wear
- Home and Leisure
- Going Out
For some, this list is probably too small. You may even want to sort by season so that you can pack some things away that you may not wear for months. I preferred to keep it by occasion so that I could put things into that category and create outfits later.
There were also some items that could have fit into multiple categories so I kept these separately too – so that I could mix and match.
I was hoping that I would be able to sort through the pile in an hour and then start to create outfits and be done by the end of the day.
The reality was that it took me three days just to go through and categorise my clothing and that was before I started to create any outfits. As I was back at work on day 3 I started to move items back to my wardrobe and drawers so that the clutter was out of sight (and unfortunately, out of mind).
Back at the mountain of clothes, I’d also separated out anything that I didn’t want to keep. This was sorted into things to throw away and things to be donated.
Once the clothes-sorting was complete and I looked back in my wardrobe and drawers I was still left with:
- 79 hangers of clothes
- 50 folded items
And that didn’t include some of the things I had in the wash. Quite honestly I don’t know whether that it a lot compared to other people but it certainly feels like too many clothes!
I still haven’t put any outfits together… maybe in the next few weeks I can pull some bits together and show you in some later posts and we can see if I can style some new outfits.
Have you done a wardrobe clear-out recently? What’s your process?
